The Madman’s Story

Planet Earth in revolt!

Publishers want to publish books that are between 50,000 and 80,000 words. Books larger than that means they have to spend more time editing, and then there is more to print, so you won’t find big, thick books on your supermarket shelf these days.

This is one of many reasons why we won’t have any more big, thick books like Dune, or The Stand.

I understand this. When I first published The Bomber’s Story it was too thick for self publishing. 240,000 words. I eventually had to cut it in half, which resulted in The Bomber’s Story and The Madman’s Story.

But there is a deeper story here.

I wrote Monkeyland and thought I was finished. I decided to write a series. One book would be a bank robbery, another about blackmail, and so on. I wrote two and a half books, and then it hit me. I mean, it really hit me. I started shuffling sections of these two and a half books around. Not just paragraphs, but whole sections, back and forth, and i ended up with…one book.

It was weird, I had been writing a 240,00 behemoth of a book in out of place monster fragments. When I reassembled everything it fit together absolutely perfectly.

It was a monster of fusion and complications.

As in The Bomber’s Story, the secret history of the Madman is detailed at the beginning of every chapter. The whole timeline of planet earth was laid out and reassembled, like my book had been, into something that made total sense.

Who causes wars? Who causes financial panics and plagues and all the misfortunes of this planet? The people don’t want it, so…who?

Well, The Bomber’s Story revealed ‘who,’ so now the question is ‘what do we do about it?’

The racial wars of Monkeyland come to fruition, wars break out across the globe, but it gets worse.

The madman decides he’s had enough; he decides to kill off mankind. Hey, it’s his planet, and he can do what he wants!

What he doesn’t plan on, however, is Randall Davis. Randall Davis is something of an anomaly, and he has a hidden talent that will bring misery to the Madman.

A REVIEW OF THE MONKEYLAND SERIES

Having read at least a few thousand fiction books and series in my lifetime, I can testify that the Monkeyland series by Al Case is the best fiction series I’ve ever read.  It’s got everything.  The characters are so well-written and real that it’s just incredible.  Even with the bit characters, you will find yourself caring and wondering what will happen to them.  Al Case does an excellent job of transporting you to the locale and showing you around.  The plot is gripping — and fascinating — and completely original.  Everything from the attitude of the press, to the complacency of government and the reality and depth of people’s thought and character, is remarkably true to life.
